Materials and firing

Clay can be recycled as many times as you like until it has been fired. And the only way to get better is to make, make, make. So to help you improve, you are free to make as many pots as you like and we will recycle anything you decide not to keep, all included in the class fees. Once you are happy with something you’ve made we will be happy to bisque fire it for you. After that you can glaze it and we will fire it again.

Once your work is ready to collect we will weigh it and calculate the materials charge. Just to give you an idea, most small and medium-sized pieces will be under 500g (or £2). As you get better at making, you will find that your pots get lighter and therefore cheaper! Hopefully this arrangement will encourage you to be experimental in what you make but also a little bit choosy about what you fire. If you want to make something big, it is always worth making a small one first (a maquette) to refine your design and test your decoration before you scale-up.

1 The materials and firing prices are based on pieces like mugs, small bowls and vases that can be arranged efficiently in the kiln. If you make pieces that are very tall or wide then we may need to come to a special arrangement that reflects the difficulty of packing them efficiently in the kiln. Please also remember that we are not equipped to deal with students going into production.
