I enjoy exploring the shapes that can be made by hand-building with clay – a smooth stoneware for burnishing and smoke-firing, porcelain, a rough crank or even clay dug from the garden. I usually start by making a pinch pot and then leave the clay to firm up before adding coils which are pressed and moulded into organic shapes. I’ll generally have a shape in mind but often find myself adapting to the clay as it grows.

Decoration is constantly evolving. Smoke-firing works well with the organic shapes but I’m also using combinations of slips, glazes and oxides to make pieces which are unique and functional. [See more…]

Profile

I first studied ceramics at school and alongside a career in music and education I have continued to make vessels and sculptural pieces. I have now turned the skills I gained giving private music lessons to teaching pottery from our garden studio in Cottenham. [Read more…]
